Fixing My Gaze
A fascinating family group portrait. Working from this old portrait photograph I loved discovering details and imagining conversations and personalities. As they all fix their gaze the youngest are almost holding their breath, yet are still ever so slightly blurred.
I enjoyed working in a rich colour palette with deep crimson and a creamy white with blue greys as well. This piece has some collage elements added and blended into the scene. There is a looseness to the marks with enough detail to describe. It took several layers of painting, sanding back and glazing to create the atmosphere on this one. Warm pinks and tiny flashes of orange also appear with a complementary olive green.
Acrylic on hardwood panel, varnished and sealed.
