An old sepia photograph of a family group having a picnic in the dappled shade painted on a smaller panel. The colours range from a deep crimson/ warm brown to a rose red, pale pink and creamy white with blue/green greys, speckles of green and bright blue.

An old sepia photograph of a family group having a picnic in the dappled shade painted on a smaller panel. I loved the composition of this one with the big creamy white blanket, hats, cups and saucers and hands poised with a sandwich or a piece of cake. The colours range from a deep crimson/ warm brown to a rose red, pale pink and creamy white with blue/green greys, speckles of green and bright blue. Can you spot the photographers tea and cake abandoned in order to take the shot? There is a looseness to the marks with enough detail to describe.

Layers of paint, texture and glazing are used to create the atmosphere. Acrylic on hardwood panel, varnished and sealed.

I enjoy portrait painting from old photographs and the discoveries that can be mined as I study the image closely.
